Next Generation Network Challenges

The scalability issues with the Diameter control plan are derived both from the increase in data traffic as well as from the amount of signaling of new services, new charging models, and the fragmentation of the control plane into an ever increasing number of different network elements. In the legacy telecom world which was dominantly a voice oriented architecture, the scalability challenges were focused on the transport layer. This is not the case with NGN (or IMS or LTE) where the interface between different network elements, such as GGSN to the OCS is now part of the Diameter control plane. To enable true network scalability and to manage the growing amount of data traffic in an NGN and IMS environment, today’s telecom operators need to take into account the Diameter control plane as an essential part of its network architecture strategy.
